Chapter Twenty-Seven

Breezy sat in her tent, her entire body coursing with adrenaline. She had killed both Lee Palmer and Bobby Biddle. Phillip Jones was the only one left. She could soon return home in the knowledge that she’d avenged her family’s deaths.

The friends Breezy had lost in those mountains would forever be her family. Dead or alive.

She wondered for the thousandth time why God had allowed her to survive when nearly everyone she’d ever cared about had died.

Perhaps her destiny had yet to be fulfilled. Maybe she was meant to do exactly what she’d just done. Wipe out the evil that walked the earth.

But Breezy didn’t want to spend her life killing. She wanted normalcy and peace. Yet, peace would never come until the last of the garbage had been disposed of. And she would dispose of him soon. Very soon.

A soft, mewling sound brought Breezy out of her reflections. She glanced around her tent to find Sadie lying on her side, panting, in a corner.

“Are you having your babies?” Breezy anxiously got to her knees and scrambled to the animal’s side. “I don’t suppose you’d consider waiting for a day or two? No? I didn’t think so.”

She ran her hand along the side of Sadie’s head. “It’s okay, girl. Everything will be all right, I promise.” But Breezy didn’t believe her own words. Nothing would ever be right again.

Sadie lifted her head, her trusting gaze seeking out Breezy’s.

Breezy grew emotional. She sat with Sadie for the next several hours, doing what she could to help her give birth.

Seven tiny puppies later, Breezy dropped heavily to her bottom and breathed a sigh of relief. “You did good, Sadie, girl. Really good.”
